"See parts of Jamaica that over 90% of tourists will never see!"-Kevin Long, 2002
Site Description:
St. Christopher's School for the Deaf, opened in 1942, is the oldest Residential School for the Deaf in the English-speaking Caribbean. Its property is adjacent to the bustling agricultural town of Brown's Town and is surrounded by rural community life. It is in the heart of St. Ann, Jamaica's "Garden Parish," and approximately half an hour's drive from one of Jamaica's most active tourist areas.
The school currently has 63 children on roll between the ages of three and twelve years of age, eight teachers and numerous care staff, some of whom are Deaf. Students live on campus during the school year and return to their own homes during school breaks. Some of the care staff stays on campus throughout the calendar year.
