MADC 2003 Conference Updated Information

June 27-28, 2003

What: The Minnesota Association of the Deaf, Inc. 55th Biennial Conference

When: Friday and Saturday, June 27th and 28th, 2003. (Deadline for early bird rates was April 30th. Sorry if you missed it!)

Where: 4 Points Sheraton Hotel, formerly the Sheraton Metrodome Hotel, in Minneapolis, near Rosedale Mall. (The hotel is conveniently located right off I-35 W.)

SCHEDULE

Friday Morning:

8:30 to 5:00 p.m. - Registration (Light Refreshments provided until 10 a.m.)

9 a.m. to 12 noon - Gestural Skills workshop for interpreters provided by nationally well-known mime, Bill Carwile

10 a.m. to 12 noon - MADC business meeting

Friday Afternoon:

12 noon to 1:30 LUNCH ON YOUR OWN

1:30 to 3:00 and 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. (Workshop Session A)
"How to Run An Organization Smoothly."
Come and learn all about how an organization can run smoothly so that you can have fun! Sean Virnig will talk about his experience with developing and running many organizations. He will talk about why organizations are important for the Deaf community and how they can make things happen for many reasons. The workshop then will focus on how the Deaf community shapes purposes and functions of several organizations in Minnesota. Communications, purposes, and money are several examples the workshop will cover. Be prepared to participate and talk about your experience as well!

1:30 to 3 p.m. (Workshop Session B-1)
"Technology and how it effects or can effect the lives of deaf people" CSD of South Dakota.

3:30 to 5 p.m. (Workshop Session B-2)
"Deaf: Know Your Rights?"
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services ~ Metro office, and a representative from the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. It will be focusing on the rights of deaf people. Emphasis will be placed on access rights in health care and law enforcement settings. Numerous role-play situations will be incorporated throughout the session. Audience members will be asked to participate.

Friday night:

7 to 11 p.m.: Entertainment and socialization at the hotel ballroom. There will be music to feel or hear by and dancing for those so inclined as well as plenty of tables for those that just want to sit and socialize with old and new friends. Our guest mime, Bill Carwile will also be visiting you!

Saturday Morning:

8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Registration (Light refreshments until 9:30 a.m.)
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 - MADC Business Meeting Continues and Elections

Election of officers and some members-at-large for the 2003-05 board of directors will take place towards the end of the Business Meeting. If you are interested in running for one of the vacant positions on the MADC board of directors, please give it some serious thought and let us know as soon as possible. (If you need more information, contact Doug Bahl ( ) or Rhonda Ellenbecker ( ) from the nominations committee.

MADC has made much progress since the 2001 conference and the Business Meetings will be filled with important information for MADC members. Please attend and be informed of what is happening with YOUR organization.

Saturday, 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.:

MADC Awards Luncheon with Marilyn J. Smith, Vice President of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) as the the keynote speaker. After the keynote speech, the awards will be presented followed by entertainment, provided by an internationally known deaf mime from Kansas, Bill Carwile.
