Become a Domestic Violence Volunteer Advocate

CSD of Minnesota is a non-profit organization that offers a Deaf Domestic Violence Program which serves deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind victims of domestic violence. The program also provides prevention education to the general community.

Each CSD-MN Domestic Violence Volunteer Advocate holds the responsibility of delivering quality service, which addresses the need of domestic violence victims and concerned others who contact the program. Services include providing emotional support, medical and legal information and advocacy, and appropriate referral services. Advocates strictly adhere to CSD?s confidentiality policy.

Activities:

  • Commit to the Deaf Domestic Violence Program for one year
  • Commit to Domestic Violence Advocacy Training (starting October 2003)
  • Follow agency policies and procedures
  • Provide crisis intervention in-person and/or via pager
  • Provide referral information for victims and family members
  • Participate in self and agency evaluation once a year
  • Consult with Deaf Domestic Violence Program Coordinator for support and guidance
  • Attend monthly advocacy meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality

Qualifications:
Volunteer advocates must be a high school graduate who is at least 21 years of age. The main qualification is a sincere concern for the well being of abused victims. The volunteer must be a mature adult of sound character with fluency or working knowledge of American Sign Language. The volunteer advocate must be able to interact and talk with people of various educational and ethnic backgrounds. An essential characteristic is the ability to be objective and nonjudgmental.
