The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) released a memo for deaf and hard
of hearing advocates to share with establishments that offer drive-through
service. Advocates may use this memo when requesting accessible
drive-through service.
Drive-through windows are a service provided by restaurants, banks,
pharmacies, and other businesses as a convenience to their customers. It is
only fair – and legal – that such service be accessible to deaf and hard of
hearing people. Deaf and hard of hearing patrons must not be denied service
at drive-through windows.
The NAD supports efforts to make drive-through services accessible for deaf
and hard of hearing patrons. The NAD recognizes and commends various actions
taken by our stakeholders to educate businesses to ensure effective
communication at drive through windows for deaf and hard of hearing people.
To support such advocacy, the NAD has written a memo on businesses’ legal
obligations to provide access at their drive-through service for deaf and
hard of hearing patrons and encouraging businesses to make reasonable
modifications and/or provide aids or services. This memo can be printed and
shared with businesses that offer drive-through services.
